In 2014 I collaborated with “Shop Pick First” and Raiders’ wide receiver Rod Streater to generate awareness for the t-shirt “In Rod We Trust.” Shop Pick First wanted to boost sales and do so on a shoestring budget.
At the time, the “Beats by Dre” advertising campaign “Hear What You Want” was everywhere. The thinking was to create a series of videos parodying the campaign, and frame Rod Streater as the creator.
We released our first video on YouTube without any promoted placement. Within five hours it was trending on Twitter, Yahoo! and CNN. Multiple media outlets, including ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” aired the video, and Shop Pick First’s sales went up 1,000%. For the following two years, the hashtag #beatsbystreats trended any time Rod Streater scored a touchdown.
